I left my yuppie city job in the late 80’s and spent time traveling the usual hippie trail east. I discovered for myself that people are more interesting than money.

Back in the UK, unable to get back to a cushy traders job, I drove a minicab by day, went on a photojournalisim course at night and started my photography career by submitting Ice hockey pics to the local South London Guardian. Shooting Sunday night games and learning the dark room before delivering prints to their office Monday mornings.
I freelanced for them pretty much full time for a few years.

The then Chief photographer at The Croydon Advertiser, John Nunn, approached me and I started working 3 days a week for him alongside some pretty regular freelance work at various PR clients and went full time at the Ad a few years after that and was promoted to chief nearly 5 years ago.

I now run a busy desk with 4 full time photographers and scanner/imaging person. We have a pool of regular freelancers.

I love photography and really enjoy the challenge of news. No two days are the same.

Who would want a ‘ proper job?’

Fergus Burnett. Freelance photographer

Fergus Burnett began photographing people, objects and places 15 years ago.
After winning a bursary with Olympus and Fuji which took him all over the world, he settled in London where he enjoyed a career in photojournalism and soon became Group Chief Photographer for 19 weekly papers.
Now working for himself, Fergus does all kinds of photographic jobs for all sorts of clients – from small businesses to blue-chip companies, charities to government departments. He also works at many of London’s top hotels documenting exclusive weddings and black tie events.
